Lausanne Collegiate School is continuing to make our presence known outside of the city of Memphis.

Last week, a group of 12 Lausanne teachers and administrators traveled to The Oakridge School in Arlington, Texas for the first Lausanne Learning Institute (LLI) Southwest learning conference. The conference was focused on Makerspace strategies and real world learning. Three hundred educators from over 50 schools, nationally and internationally, shared ideas on student-centered learning strategies and how to implement the innovative practices in their own schools.

"It was wonderful to be able to share the experiences and learning process that our Lausanne students are immersed in," said Lausanne JK teacher and LLI Oakridge presenter Carrie Miller. "Also, being able to collaborate with educators from other schools around the country was both exhilarating and inspiring."

The "fishbowl" sessions were a unique addition from other conferences. Attendees were able to watch visiting teachers in a live classroom environment featuring Oakridge students. This provided a valuable model of good teaching rather than the typical conference experience of PowerPoint presentations. The debriefing time after the sessions allowed observers to ask questions about the lesson after observing an active example.

"It was a great collaboration across the board, from the schools, the teachers, the students and even the parents," said Seth Burgess, Director of the Lausanne Learning Institute, which will host its 15th annual conference on the Lausanne campus this summer. "Based on the buzz around the fishbowl sessions and the high level of professional development, we feel confident that next year will be even better."

Lausanne faculty presented on such topics as:

  • Strategic Planning for Schools; 21st Century Hiring in Education - Headmaster Stuart McCathie & Michael Christopher (Assistant Headmaster for Development)
  • Virtual Reality in Education; Scaling Innovation in Schools - Kwaku Aning (Director of Learning Innovations and Instructional Design)
  • Cubelets Robotics; Paper Mechanics; Design Thinking in Content Areas - Kim Bullard (Middle School S.T.E.A.M) & Jon Auger (Upper School visual arts)
  • Project Based Learning for Kindergarten - Lindy Roberson, Carrie Miller, and Amy Morrison- JK
  • Interdisciplinary Challenges with BreakoutEDU - Amy Brownlee (5th grade math)
  • Behavior Management in Lower School Makerspace - Brad Manker (Lower School Technology)
